PSL losing players due to discipline

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) teams have had a number of players who were very talented but could not go further in their careers because of disciplinary issues. The league has had a lot of players’ contracts terminated because their teams were tired of their wayward behavior.

It seems as if it has become a trend for players to start drinking and use banned substances as soon as they start earning a lot of money from football. This problem started many years ago where the country has lost a lot of very talented youngsters due to these problems.

It goes down to the level of education our players have and also their back grounds were they grew up without any proper channels were children should be taught how to behave and carry themselves when they start earning a lot of money and also when they start being in the limelight in life.

The recent players to be released by their teams indicates that the football association and the league which are SAFA and PSL still has a long way to go regarding this matter including all professional teams. They should have structures to educate young players about the dangers of getting themselves into unnecessary habits which destroy careers.

The country has lost top talent due to disciplinary problems in the past. The likes of Jabu Mahlangu was known to drink and forget to go to important matches when he was still playing for Kaizer Chiefs and mostly when they were supposed to face Mamelodi Sundowns the following day. He was their star player and failed to live to expectations until they released him.

Let us look at the recent talented players who were released by their PSL teams due to disciplinary problems:

  1. Thandani Ntshumayelo of Orlando Pirates was banned for using banned substances while playing in an official game for Pirates and has been given a five year ban due to those activities. He has already served a few months now and it is not going to be easy for him to return to professional football as a lot of teams do not want to associate themselves with undisciplined players.
  2. Mark Mayambela of Supersport United was shown the door by the Pretoria based team due to a number of incidences where he was seen drinking publicly and was already given a few warnings about it but he continued to do the same thing again and again until he was released. He is a luck man because Ajax Cape Town recently signed him.
  3. Masibusane Zongo of Platinum Stars was shown the exit door by Platinum Stars after going AWOL more than three times. The team previously gave him a warning but he still continued with his habit and was shown the door. He is currently without a team in the PSL and seems no team is ready to have him in their books as they fear their up and coming young players could be influenced to do the same by him.
  4. Chris Matombo of Chippa United was also shown the door due to disciplinary issues. Chippa United were very excited to sign him from Kaizer Chiefs but what they received was not a package they were expecting as the young lad had disciplinary problems. He was released and currently without a team.
