Free State Stars coach Luc Eymael has confirmed he is looking to bring Patrick Phungwayo to the Bethlehem side following his release from Orlando Pirates.
The 29-year-old left-back, who made just 17 appearances for the Buccaneers last season, had his contract in Soweto mutually terminated today, making him a free agent and eligible to join any club at any point.
Stars would love to have an experienced player at left-back after losing Bokang Thlone to Bidvest Wits.
And Eymael, who was appointed Ea Lla Koto coach in mid-August, has now targeted the former Bucs defender.
“As you know, we are assessing [Cheslyn] Jampies but it will depend at the end of this week because we are also interested in Pirates’ Patrick Phungwayo because our left-back Makhehleni Makhawula has just done a surgery, he got injured in our last game,” Eymael tells our source.
“When I was in Belgium I read somewhere that Pirates are ready to release him. I spoke to Mike Makaab but he will only arrive today from Belgium.”
Phungwayo joined the Buccaneers from Bidvest Wits as a promising player in 2012 but was never able to fulfil his potential.
Before his departure, the player struggled to play regularly in the Buccaneers’ starting line-up and is now looking for a new home where he can play regularly.
