Maritzburg United came from behind to defeat Ajax Cape Town 2-1 at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday evening.
Tashreeq Morris grabbed the lead for the Urban Warriors in the sixth minute with a powerful header inside the box following a dipping cross from Thabo Mosadi on the left wing, 1-0.
Muhsin Ertugral’s charges were playing at high tempo after 10 minutes as Toriq Losper nearly doubled the lead with a side-footed shot inside the area.
The Team of Choice could have been awarded a penalty in the 21st minute after Lebohang Maboe appeared to have been brought down from behind, but the referee waved play on.
Moments later, Mahau Mokate almost equalised with a stinging shot inside the box that forced goalkeeper Brandon Petersen into a superb finger-tip save.
Lebohang Maboe could have found parity for United with a well placed side-footed shot in the 37th minute from just outside the box but Tercious Malepe produced a goal-saving block to keep the score level.
Mario Booysen almost got the second goal for the home side three minutes before halftime with a header inside, but Richard Ofori collected at the bottom corner.
Deolin Mekoa equalised for Fadlu Davids’ troops 40 seconds into the second half with a well taken shot inside the area after a fine passing move.
United had the upper hand after the hour-mark, combining well going forward although their final pass often let them down.
Siyanda Xulu gave the visitors the lead in the 69th minute with a bullet-header inside the box following a corner, 1-2.
The hosts were threatening to find the equaliser in the last 10 minutes as they thew numbers forward.
However, United gained control in the last five minutes and pinned the Urban Warriors inside their own half.
In the end, the hosts lacked the penetration in the last third and went down 2-1.
