It looks to be a two-horse race for the signature of Bidvest Wits’ Phakamani Mahlambi at present, with Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly both submitting bids for the player.
The Siya crew reported earlier this week that the two CAF Champions League winners were in the race for the player before the transfer window closes, and it has now been revealed that the two clubs have been in contact with the Clever Boys with offers for the teenager.
Mahlambi is considered one of the brightest young talents in South Africa at present, and there has been plenty of interest in the 19-year-old from all over the world, however a move to Europe at this stage looks unlikely due to the fact that most deadlines come to a close this evening and paperwork would be difficult to sort out in time.
With that in mind, Sundowns are trying to persuade Wits to do a deal before the South African window slams shut at 00h00, while Ahly have more time to work with as their window only closes next month on the 14th.
It remains to be seen what Wits’ asking price would be for the talented teen, however, it is unlikely that they would sell him cheaply, given that the two favourites for his signature are giants of the African continent and rivals either domestically or in the CCL.
The reigning Absa Premiership Young Player of the Year would no doubt be a good addition for any club snapping him up, and it’s doubtful that Gavin Hunt would mind if he ended up sticking around once the windows are closed.
The crew tried to contact Glyn Binkin, the player’s agent, for comment, but he was unavailable at the time of writing.
