Chiefs’ goalkeepers’ problems

Kaizer Chiefs Football Club is currently experiencing problems with their goalkeepers as their two experienced goalkeepers are out with injuries. The team was forced to use an inexperienced goalkeeper in their PSL match against Cape Town City FC midweek. Bruce Bvuma who was recently registered with the first team was in goals for Chiefs when they lost to by 3 goals to 2 against high flying Cape Town City FC.

Their deputy goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo was operated on his right knee last month and is scheduled to return sometime in the new season. The injury was a blow to Chiefs as Itumeleng Khune has been in and out of the team due to an injury which is becoming difficult to heal permanently. Khune is again out injured and the team is not sure if he might be able to play in their PSL match against Supersport United today.

Chiefs is now left with 2 inexperienced goalkeepers who were playing in the MDC. Bvuma and Sixhaso are now in the first team due to pressure as the senior keepers are injured. The two young men came in to the team at the time when Chiefs needed their experienced goalkeepers to help them challenge for the PSL title.

It seems as if Chiefs technical team did not read the situation with their goalkeeping department well when they let Riyaad Pieterse leave for Supersport United. Pieterse should have been given a new contract to continue playing for the team when his contract expired. It is during this period that the technical team realises their mistake of letting Pieterse leave.

The problem will lead to Steve Komphela to change his tactics from now on until the end of the season and that could backfire as he team will be forced to defend more than attacking. They will have to use 5 defenders instead of four and that will reduce the attacking options when going forward with the ball.

The team will have to use 2 central midfielders n Willard Katsande and Lucky Baloyi so that Katsande could help the defense. Baloyi will have to make sure the team is in shape when they are in possession. Other than that the team will be exposing themselves to a lot of attack from opponents.

Their match against Supersport united this afternoon will be a second test after Khune’s injury and if he is not available to play they will be in deep trouble as United has a lot of experienced players who can score as many goals as possible if their tactics are not well equipped. Bvuma will have to work hard and communicate more in order to get his defense in order as Chiefs are always relying on their goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune.

Injuries to their experienced goalkeepers could be a blow to their title challenge and they might as well end up in a position outside the top 4. Steve Komphela is in trouble with the fans as they are not expecting nothing than a win against Supersport United. Today might be a deciding day for his relationship with the Amakhosi faithful.
